FAQ

  • Yes!

I am currently “in-network” with Optum/United Healthcare (UHC, UMR, Medica), HealthPartners, and Cigna insurance plans, which means that I am able to bill your insurance directly following each of our therapy sessions. As insurance coverage can vary by plan and location, call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card to learn about your specific coverage for outpatient mental health services.

I am “out-of-network” with all other insurance plans, which means you pay out of pocket for services. Many clients have out-of-network benefits with their insurance plan and can receive partial reimbursement for mental health services. I can provide you with a monthly “superbill” (receipt) to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

I also work with clients who choose to pay privately for therapy, without involving an insurance company. Private pay allows for increased privacy, confidentiality, and flexibility with our therapy sessions.

  • You will need to confirm what outpatient mental health services you have covered, and at what cost, directly with your insurance company.

You can ask the following questions to your insurance provider by calling the Member Services phone number on the back of your insurance card:

    - Do I have out-of-network coverage?

    - Does my out-of-network health insurance plan include outpatient mental health benefits?

    - What dollar amount or percentage of each psychotherapy session is reimbursed or covered?

The billing (CPT) codes I generally use are listed below - it may help to ask “what is my financial responsibility for XXX billing code?”

    Intake Assessment: CPT Code 90791

    Follow-up Sessions: CPT Code 90837

  • Payment is due at the time of your appointment and can be made via the Sessions Health client portal.

I accept all major credit cards. You may also be able to use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) for payment.

  • If you need to cancel or reschedule a therapy session, please contact me 24 hours before your appointment. After the second time there has been a late cancellation or no-show for an appointment, the full session fee will be charged. Please note that insurance does not cover this fee and you are responsible for payment.

  • You will need a smart phone, tablet, or computer with camera access and a strong internet connection to participate in online therapy. Prior to our appointment, I will send you a link to join the virtual therapy room.

To protect your privacy and confidentiality, I use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform for our therapy appointments. I also ensure that I am located in a quiet, private environment for our sessions and I ask that you do the same.

  • Online therapy (also known as telehealth, teletherapy, or telepsychology) has been extensively researched. Studies show that online therapy is just as effective as in-person mental health therapy for many people.

In fact, being able to access therapy from the privacy and comfort of your own space may actually lead to more effective therapy sessions because you might find yourself more willing to discuss difficult topics.

Not to mention, online therapy has the added perks of convenience, flexibility, comfy pants, and no travel time!

  • No, you don’t!

  • Therapy is a highly individualized process. The length of therapy depends on your unique situation and goals. I highly recommend that all clients begin with weekly sessions, if possible, as research indicates this is the most effective frequency for clients. Typically, my treatment approach involves gradually transitioning to biweekly or monthly sessions for maintenance purposes once substantial progress toward client goals has been achieved. This will be a collaborative decision.

  • As of January 1, 2022, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate that explains how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers must give clients who do not have insurance, or who choose to not use insurance, an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services, including individual therapy. You have the right to ask your healthcare provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is greater than $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
